Traditional leaders have voiced out their concerns over a lack of support by the government when it comes to their wellbeing and executing their duties.
This has been raised during the Traditional and Khoi San Leadership Summit held by the Eastern Cape Traditional Affairs Department in KuGompo (formerly East London).
They say more still needs to be done for them to cater for their communities.
Provincial Chairperson of Contralesa, Nkosi Mwelo Nonkonyana says the issues of being neglected as royal houses in decisions needs urgent attention.
“These are the challenges, and they are creating a problem. They are creating unnecessary instability. The necessary support of traditional leaders, in terms of them getting everything, is a cause for concern. For instance, we launched traditional policing in Nqadu some time ago, and there is no traditional policing as we speak. Years ago, when I was still a minister, (who) was the chair of the house that time? Nothing happened.”
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane says they are aware of the concerns raised, adding that a lot of work has been done to accommodate traditional authorities.
“The problem is what traditional leaders are earning, which makes it very difficult for them to look for such kind of things, even though they are in dire need of that. Well, that’s what is being looked at in terms of national government working with us as provinces on how we can deal and address that problem on a sustainable basis,” says Mabuyane.
