Tanzania on Monday repatriated citizens from the Middle East after they were stranded amid heightened regional tensions, officials said.
An Air Tanzania flight carrying the group landed at Julius Nyerere International Airport, where relatives and officials gathered to receive them. Some returnees described experiencing explosions and prolonged fear before their evacuation.
Officials said travellers from several countries had been stuck for days as airlines altered routes and schedules due to the insecurity. Tanzania said the operation forms part of wider efforts to safeguard nationals affected by disruptions across the region.
One of the repatriated citizens, Rashid Muiga, I used to see this on different media but, this was my first time experiencing such. I experienced the explosions at first hand and I have to say it was very scary. Let us preserve and treasure our country’s peace. Conflicts, disagreements and thereafter explosions will only disturb our peace.”
