A suspect has been shot dead after holding two police officers hostage at gunpoint in one of the holding cells at Ntuzuma Police Station, north of Durban.
It is alleged that the man was arrested for attempted murder.
Police say he became agitated in the police cells when two officers went in to officially charge him.
The man allegedly overpowered the officers, who then called for backup. When backup arrived, a scuffle ensued and the man disarmed one of the armed officers and he shot at them before locking them inside the cell.
Police spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says, “The police officers had managed to take cover because the man had a gun and he locked the other members in the cell. He continued shooting, looking for members who were hiding inside the police station. So, some members of the police managed to come and during the operation and he was shot and fatally wounded.”

Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda says a 22-year-old suspect was fatally shot during the hostage drama at Ntuzuma Police Station, north of Durban. For more visit
