The number of African women in chartered accountancy stands at just more than 8,500.
The Department of Basic Education wants professional bodies to collaborate to build sustainable change.
Gwarube says a positive development is that more schools are offering accounting as a subject, but the maths uptake is not good.
“More and more schools are offering accounting as a subject and we saw an uptake this year, which was really, really good, but I am equally concerned about the in drop in Maths and Science participation,” says Gwarube.
