Acting Deputy National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Hilda Senthumule says the disbandment of the Political Task Team (PKTT) should have followed a formal assessment and a clear decision by the relevant structures.
Senthumule is appearing before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee looking into concerns around issues of national security.
She has challenged the suggestion that the unit had become irregular after 2022.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on special leave, has been facing scrutiny over the decision.
“My take is, again, if he says it was irregular, it should be backed by a meeting with a decision that then said the team has managed to stabilise political killings in KwaZulu-Natal. And I think as a structure together with the DGs, including the current commissioner, then they would have said that there’s no further requirement for the PKTT. I gave an example of a project in one of the provinces where that assessment was reached and a decision to decommission was taken. And again, as you decommission, then you take care of specific elements that requires extension and you disband those that don’t require extension.”

Senthumule has also testified that 125 cases related to the PKTT were transferred to KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape after it was disbanded.
Sixty of these cases were politically related while 46 were cases on traditional leadership.
“In total 125 dockets were under investigation and of those 60 were political related. 46 were traditional leadership related, 16 were parallel cases, two were University of Fort Hare and one Ad Hoc. So, all these cases were under investigation and 10 dockets were already submitted for decision at the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions’) office. So, all these 125 cases plus 10 were to be transferred to KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape, serious and violent crimes particularly murder and robbery for investigations.”
