The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heat advisory for the Cape Town Metro for the coming week with temperatures expected to peak at around 30 degrees Celsius.
Residents are being urged to take precautionary measures to stay cool and hydrated.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management Spokesperson, Sonica Lategan, says vulnerable groups including children and the elderly should avoid direct sunlight, drink plenty of water, wear light clothing and seek shaded or air-conditioned areas during the expected hot conditions.
“Where possible, stay out of direct sunlight, drink plenty of water, use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat when out and about. Also, wear light clothing and seek out shaded areas or areas with air conditioning. Also remember that the higher temperatures do increase the risk of wildfires. Please exercise extreme caution around open flames and remember to report any signs of fire,” says Lategan.
