South African National Defence Force (SANDF) Major General Siphiwe Sangweni says the deployment of the soldiers inside the country is both authorised by the Constitution and relevant legislation.
General Sangweni says President Cyril Ramaphosa as SANDF Commander In Chief is permitted to invoke this piece of legislation when necessary.
National Defence Force top brass were briefing Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Defence on the deployment of soldiers to assist police in provinces ravaged by gangsterism and illegal mining.
“The deployment of the SANDF inside the country is authorised under section 201 sub-2, sub alpha of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa of 1996. In accordance with this provision the SANDF is authorised by the President of the Republic for the services incorporation with the SAPS to prevent and combat crime and maintain and preserve law and order within the designated provinces of the Republic of South Africa.”
