Former senior state prosecutor Advocate Molatlhwa Mashuga says he was under consistent attack by private investigator Paul O’Sullivan due to his investigations against him.
Mashuga told the Ad Hoc Committee that some of O’Sullivan’s modus operandi was to use media houses to tarnish his image.
He was testifying before the committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the criminal justice system.
Mashuga explains: “The allegations were that I was captured. In fact during that time there was a sustained attack which included interviews. O’Sullivan going for interviews at different radio stations, Radio 702, Power FM and different articles were written about me. Ultimately my name even made it to a book by certain Jacques Pauw [journalist and author] where allegations of state capture were made against me.”
The Ad Hoc Committee has heard that O’Sullivan and his assistant Sarah Jane Trent infiltrated the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).
Mashuga says he was assigned to investigate O’Sullivan and his former associate, Sarah-Jane Trent, in 2017 on multiple charges, such as allegedly impersonating a police officer, fraud and extortion among others.
“At a particular point in time, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate which is IPID was infiltrated by Mr Paul O’Sullivan who was a complainant in a matter that I [was] allocated to prosecute as well as her assistant Sarah-Jane Trent,” he adds.
