About 700 homeless people have been removed from the Moore Road area in the Durban CBD.
Police say the homeless people had established informal dwellings on the side of the road, making the area unsafe.
It’s not clear where the homeless people have been relocated.
Metro Police spokesperson Boysie Zungu says “We had a joint operation with SAPS and other municipality partners in order to address the problem of the homeless who are illegally occupying the sidewalk and roadway. They have created an informal settlement in that area, which makes it difficult for motorists to use the roads clearly and safely. We have received a number of complaints from the public about the high rate of crime in that place. So on that Friday operation, we stop and search, we search them, and we recovered a number of firearms, drugs.”
