The Department of Education in George in the Western Cape has suspended a teacher for allegedly humiliating a child on social media.
The teacher has been suspended pending an investigation into alleged discrimination against the learner.
The allegation follows the circulation of a video taken by the teacher during hashtag PieDay at the school.
It shows learners in class having a pie and a juice, with one learner, who allegedly did not have money to pay for the pie, sitting with his face covered by his hand.
Jewel Jonkers is the district director at the Department for Eden and the Central Karoo.
“Just remind them again in terms of the safe code of conduct for teachers. The fact that we are here to make sure that no child gets left behind, every child gets taken care of. So, what we’ll do in terms of the teacher who is the alleged perpetrator, we have suspended her temporarily from school pending the outcome of the investigation.”
