The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed deep concern following the arrest of a mathematics educator at Ivory Park Secondary School, north of Johannesburg, for allegedly raping a Grade 12 learner.
The incident, which took place in December last year when the learner was in Grade 11, was formally reported by the learner’s mother to the school on Monday.
The educator was then arrested on Wednesday after he allegedly tried to evade authorities.
The department’s spokesperson Steve Mabona says, “Also wanted to remind educators that they are entrusted with a responsibility of nurturing and guiding our children while they are in their environment. So, they also need to make sure that they safeguard the learners and make sure that their well-being and development are intact. So, as parents, they also need to make sure that it’s not compromised at all.”
