Embattled Kaizer Chiefs co-coach Cedric Kaze says now is not the time to panic, after the club slumped to their fifth defeat in six matches following a 1–0 loss to Richards Bay FC Tuesday night.
In what turned out to be one of Chiefs’ worst performances this season, nothing seemed to work for Amakhosi. The team finished the match without a single shot on target, managing only two attempts on goal.
The result leaves Chiefs stuck on 30 points in fifth place on the Betway Premiership table, with their hopes of chasing the league title now looking increasingly unlikely.
Kaze insists the team must remain calm despite the current slump in form.
“It is a difficult time at the moment and sometimes teams go through things like that, but that’s when we need to stay calm and find solutions because if we start panicking things can get bad.
“We need to remain calm,” said the co-coach.
Chiefs looked disjointed throughout the match, having made five changes to the starting line-up — including handing a long-awaited debut to Nkanyiso Shinga at left-back, seven months into the season.
The co-coaching duo also continued with the controversial approach of bringing players straight back into the starting 11 after long-term injuries, but Shinga didn’t finish the game, due to an injury, and Chiefs only had 10 players on the pitch.
“He’s a new player in the country and hasn’t played in the PSL. He first needs to train well and get used to the league and his partners as well, but we thought that it was the right moment to introduce him.
“I spoke to the medical staff, we are going to assess him tonight and tomorrow morning and see what the extent of his injury is.”
Amakhosi now find themselves in a difficult position, facing the prospect of finishing the season without silverware and outside the CAF Champions League qualification spots.
The defeat also means they have now lost four matches in a row in all competitions — including three in the league.
Kaze admits their defence looked shaky during the game.
“Our defence was a little bit shaky, and every ball they played into our defence was threatening. There weren’t any chances for both teams in the first half, but in the second half we felt that we didn’t threaten the opposition’s defensive line and we didn’t make enough runs behind the line, but unfortunately we conceded the goal at a moment when I though we were the better team on the field.”
Chiefs were also dealt a blow just before kick-off when captain for the day, Inacio Miguel, was ruled out after picking up an injury during the warm-up. That forced the team to start with two left-footed centre-backs — a combination that struggled to settle during the match.
Kaze says injuries and suspensions have been among the team’s biggest challenges this season.
