Some residents of Diepkloof in Soweto are calling on Eskom to urgently introduce a flat rate of at least R350 for their electricity consumption.
They say the prepaid meter system is unaffordable for the unemployed and pensioners.
The resident marched to Eskom offices in the area on Friday to express their frustration.  They say they will not allow the power utility to continue with the installation of smart pre-paid metres.
“And if you check the household, you’ll find one house there’s only one person that is working and how would they manage the electricity, for a smart box you pay something like R2 500,” says one of residents.
Another resident says, “Yeah, we are willing to pay, absolutely. It’s just that, what we are saying is that paying through the prepaid meter is not sustainable for the majority. That is why we are proposing that a flat rate tariff be instituted so that we allow most of the people who are unemployed in particular to be able to also afford services.”
