Eskom says the payment of a flat rate tariff for electricity is not feasible. This follows calls by Diepkloof residents in Soweto for Eskom to introduce a flat rate of at least R350 for electricity consumption.
Residents marched to Eskom’s Soweto offices on Friday, where they objected to the installation of smart prepaid meters where they will be billed based on the electricity they consume.
Gauteng Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi says the utility will continue with the installation of prepaid meters.
“Billing is based on consumption, so the different household consume electricity differently, therefore the billing will be based on that. When you purchase electricity, you purchase a certain amount, and you will use it for that particular period. So, the flat rate is something that is not sustainable, it is something that Eskom cannot implement and the tariffs are approved by Nersa.”
