The South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) has criticised the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department for retracting its previous approval of the government’s early retirement offer.
The department had initially invited employees to apply for early retirement without penalties, but has now cited financial constraints for its inability to comply with the Cabinet decision.
Sadtu says this reversal negatively affects teachers who had already made retirement arrangements.
The union’s provincial secretary Nomarashiya Caluza says they will engage the department on the issue.
“We have agreed with the HOD’s that on Thursday we will be having a meeting with them. And it is after that as we have stated in our statement, that we will consider our next step. But our view as Sadtu is that teachers in KZN who applied for early retirement must be treated equally.”
“Because this thing is happening in all provinces, it’s not just an initiative meant for KZN. So we can’t have a situation where employees in KZN are treated differently from the rest of the employees in the country. That will amount to unfair labour practice.”
