The Department of Water and Sanitation’s Deputy Minister, Isaac Seitlholo, says the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) will investigate alleged water tanker schemes in the City of Tshwane.
He says spending on water tankers in the city has reportedly ballooned to over R770 million.
The SIU and the Department of Water and Sanitation launched the Water Sector Anti-Corruption Forum earlier this week to investigate and ensure that those who profit from the public’s lack of water are held accountable.
Seitlholo says municipalities should prioritise fixing water infrastructure instead of relying on long-term tanker tenders.
“I made an undertaking at the portfolio committee on Tuesday that the department must, as a custodian, be able to undertake a full-scale audit of all 144 water services authorities in as far as water tankering is concerned. Because we cannot have a situation where municipalities are giving long-term tenders of tankering.”

And I’ve often maintained that nothing happens that is corruption-related without anybody that is inside the institutions enabling that particular corruption to happen. That is why the acting SIU head, Lakhad, emphasised the issue of lifestyle audits.”
