President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the families of the six people who died after a two-storey business park building collapsed in Ormonde, south of Johannesburg.

Three bodies have been retrieved, while three other people are believed to be in the rubble. Three people sustained injuries, one of whom is being treated in hospital.
Rescue operations are continuing at the site, where the City of Johannesburg confirmed that construction was taking place illegally, as there were no approved building plans.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya says he expects that an inquiry into the collapse will provide closure to the families of the deceased.
“The President’s thoughts also go out to survivors, some of whom are still trapped in the rubble of the business park premises. President Ramaphosa expects an inquiry into the collapse will provide answers to the families of the deceased and to survivors and that such an inquiry will help to prevent a recurrence of a tragedy such as this.”
