Zingcuka location residents in Kieskammahoek in the Eastern Cape have lambasted the Amathole District Municipality for failure to ensure sufficient and consistent water supply to the residents for the past four months.
The residents have since resorted to protesting, closing entries in and out of the village and closing valves that allow water from Sandile Dam to exit to water treatment plants, in a bid to demonstrate their frustration.
They say water provision and the road infrastructure challenges have been plaguing their community for a very long time, claiming that Amahlathi Local Municipality and Amathole District Municipality neglected them.
Community members say they have been voicing their grievances to the local authorities to no avail and Nomphelo Somdaka says they resorted to closing the supply to get government’s attention.
“We are angry because the clean water that come from this dam does not come to us, they feed other communities. This dam is in our land, we were told to move our forefathers’ graves for this dam for us to get clean water, yet it does not help us. When this water is purified, it does not come back to us.”
Amathole District Municipality spokesperson Sisa Msiwa says the community experienced water disruptions due to infrastructure damages, and power failure to its water treatment works and that residents should expect water during the weekend.
“Approximately two weeks ago there was a pump fault at the water treatment works. This caused disruption to the water supply and once that pump was repaired, there was a pipe burst, it was also repaired but following that a power supply failure at the treatment works caused additional disruption. The power supply was restored and water pumping has resumed.”
